This gun was a sad mess when I spotted it at a gun show, for sale by a pawn shop. I ended up paying around $200 for it, and sent it to Dieter Apel at New England Custom Guns, asking for his opinion on whether it was worth restoring. He replied strongly in the affirmative and I gave him the green light. The result was such that he ended up taking it to the Shot Show and SCI as a display gun, featuring it with photographs showing the original condition. Among the work done was lengthing the chambers to 2 3/4", opening the chokes to skeet and skeet, bending the stock to approximate my dimensions, rebluing the barrels and case hardening the receiver and side plates (this is, of course, a box lock gun), refinishing and recheckering the stock and fitting a leather covered recoil pad. The result is a thing of beauty and a joy forever, and has be a superb companion in the hunting field. |
