I believe you answered your own question. They are likely an Afgan inscription done locally by an owner along the line. These may have come from most anywhere in the Mideast to Asia. Some of the marks do appear to be of writing, but, could be coincidental scratches or the whitling of someone sitting guard and very bored! I love Martini rifles that have seen the service around the world. Such history to unravel. |
