A Beer for Bush Lovers African Eye News Service February 5, 2003 Sharon Hammond Skukuza After a blistering day of game viewing in the Kruger National Park, where temperatures soared to 40 degrees on Wednesday, visitors can now pop open an ice cold can of a very novel beer. South African Breweries is producing a special edition of Castle Lager that is only available at outlets in the world famous park. It's called "Friend of the Kruger National Park" and depicts Africa's Big Five animals; lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo. The idea is for guests to keep the cans as mementoes and try to collect all Big Five. For each can sold, 10 cents goes towards wildlife management at the park. Says acting director of the park, Josias Chabani: "Now Castle drinkers will go down in history as people who not only enjoy the refreshing taste of a good lager but also contribute to our nature conservation efforts." South African Breweries' Pine Pienaar said the idea is to link a South African icon like Castle Lager with another great icon, the Kruger National Park. The cans will be on sale throughout the year. If the heat doesn't let up, visitors might just opt to spot the Big Five on beer cans rather than in the bush. - African Eye News Service |
