A number of guys over on the DoubleGun BBS have done just this over the years, with fully rifled barrels. The twist-rate is probably designed for sabots, but Fosbery-style slugs worked fine for them. They used plastic shells though, and why not since once-fired hulls are cheaper than dirt!?

Unfortunately those forums have a short thread life and searches for anything over a few months old are fruitless.
