My understanding is that the 'grooves' in straight rifling were to give the black-powder fouling somewhere to go, so it wouldn't interfere with subsequent shots.

If true, there would be no advantage whatsoever over a smooth-bore for the first shot, and very little advantage for the next. If you planned to 'get amongst em' however, it could be a highly desirable feature!
