Jeffery 8-Bore

Although it's still a work in progress, I thought I post some picutres and info on my Jeffery 8-bore ball and shot gun. G&H just completed some outstanding refinish work and the stock looks like new. I'm thrilled to say the least!

It is a bit small for an 8, with the invisible rifled bores measuring .8265" and are marked 9/1. You can measure the rifling or see it with a bit of fouling in the bore, otherwise they are mirror bright.

The gun has 32" barrels and weighs 15.5 lbs. It was finished in 1896, and has folding leaves for 50 and 100 yards. According to a 1904 catalog reprint it was made for 10 drams and 1250 grain conicals. I've only shot it so far with 840 grain, .830" round balls over Blue Dot and Goex FFg. 70 grains of Blue Dot averaged 1516fps. I loaded some 10 dram FFg loads today that I'll chrono tomorrow, weather permitting (-15F today!) and will post the info. My next step is to have a conical mold made up.

"4727 8 Bore 3 1/4 case Ball or Shot Gun, A&D action cross bolt, 32" Whitworth Steel Barrels, 50&100yds, flat file cut rib, lever foreend, pistol grip stock, 15lbs"

It was completed by "Ellis" at a cost of 20 pounds, with the tubes being an additional 4, and sold for 35!
