ammo for 12 bore rifle

I've just bought a takedown Greener Martini 12 bore rifle marketed by London Guns (UK) for a spot of fun at the Big Game Rifle Club. I hope to eventually make my own reloads, but to get started, can commercial 12 gauge slug cartridges (non-rifled slugs) be used safely in a 12 bore rifle? Are any other commercial cartridges available?

I doubt a commercial slug will shoot well in a fully rifled 12 bore from Greener. I think the slugs could be smaller...but you need to find out the twistratio of your rifle first. If the twistratio is only one quarter spin of the barrel like 1:72, you have a gun that can only shoot roundballs only.
If the rifling spins more than a half the barrel length like 1:50, it can shoot projectiles too.
You also need to have a chambercast made, so you can determine ratio between the bullet dia and case walls aswell.
There is no commercial ammo made for 12 bore rifle. I know H&H can supply you with paradox ammo upon request.
Congratulation with your purchase

I believe that London Guns was in the Melbourne area and was part of Century Arms.

DGR-

Slug and measure your barrel.
Post to us here what your bore and groove diameters are, and what rate of twist your barrel is.

From there you'll no doubt get level-on advice on how to load for your new rifle.

Bore rifles are distinctly a class upon themselves, the rifles typically unique of all others.
You'll be best to load for your rifle, it's easy and cheap to do, and you'll get consistent, powerful, and accurate loads.
To put it simply, bore rifle shooters are handloaders.
You'll almost definitely need to make your own ammunition.

...and you'll LOVE it!

Re: ammo for 12 bore rifle

Thanks, Tinker. A good idea. I'm just waiting on the Permit to Acquire to arrive, and then I can pick it up from the local dealer. Slugging the barrel will be my first job, along with Rigbymauser's suggestion. Thanks, Rigbymauser.
Thanks also to you, fallingblock. Do you have any other information, or know where I can find out more about London Guns? A quick google showed no results;I will ask Graeme Wright next time I see him, but it may be a while.

Re: ammo for 12 bore rifle

John Saunders is the owner of Century Arms and is still in the Melbourne area in Balwyn.
61-3-9836-1148 They are doing a very nice looking .22lr double rifle.

Does anyone in OZ have a good idea for shipping firearms to the UAofA?

Cheers,

DGR375,
Did you perhaps get one of the pair that were for sale on the Antique Arms Auction site? If you did, Congratulations, they are both fine looking firearms, actually Congratulations anyway, you'll love playing with the bore gun, they are a tonne of fun to load for and to get to shoot.

Regards,
David.

Re: ammo for 12 bore rifle

Yes, David, it was lot 546 from the auction. Actually, I received a phone call from the fellow who bought the other gun plus the case the numbered pair came in, and he asked, pleaded, for me to sell it to him, so that the pair would be together in their proper case. Long story short, I sold it to him, and it is now on its way. It was a lovely gun, beautifully designed and built.
