Yes--it is out of season--season for moose in Montana typically runs from Sept. 15th through the last weekend in Nov. as they are a special draw permit...I have been applying for 18 years and have never drawn one... drew a cow once in another state but did not hunt her because I felt the wolves were inflicting enough damage without me going out and havesting a producing cow.

Yes, they are large -however of the 3 species of moose in N America-- these are the smallest.. and are the Shiras...next in size is the Canadian moose and the largest is the Alaskan Yukon which are probably 25% larger than these in body size and antlers

The Shiras antlers are usually in the mid to upper 40's in inches where as the Alaskan Yukon can be 60 to 70 inches or more...
