Exact centre of the Province. ; A bit of biology on Moose. : Moose here call well from about the 18th Sept through to about October 15th. : The rut is the last week of Sept and first week of October - every year, never fails - no matter what the weather is like, it is bilogically necessary that the 'rut' happens at that time - according to biologists. Every year, I hear guys saying, "Oh - the rut is late this year" - BULL Crap. You just have to be where the cows are and the bulls will be there. 18 month old bulls rarely come right in to a call, usually skirting the caller's area to check for larger bulls that might hurt them. Breeder bulls will generally come right in to the hunter. : Cows that aren't bred during the 'rut' will come back into estrus for at least 2 months after the 'rut' every 28days, but if bred later than the first "rut", their calves generally won't survive the next winter due to being too small. Nature is hard on laggards. Cows usually have twin calves. |
