Re: Warthogs in Texas Are Increasing

Feral hogs are a big problem in South Alabama. At six months a female can become fertile and then have a litter of 8-12 piglets. Usually half of the new born are females. If half of the litter survives to adult hood you have 2 to 3 more females to add to those producing young at 6 months. The population just doesn't grow it explodes, in a permissive environment. We trapped and killed over 50 off our 244 acre lease one year and it didn't seem to make a dent. More moved in from the surrounding area. You can expect a sow to have a litter about every six months. Here the feral hog population is made up of domesticated hogs who escaped from local small farms over the years and flourished in the river bottoms and peanut fields. I can recognize the various domesticated breeds in the markings and hair colors. My family raised a lot of hogs on our Family farm in Iowa. Dad keep various breeds of boars for crossbreeding purposes. I see Hampshire, Chester White, Poland China, Tamworth, and other breeds in the markings of the feral hogs here.
