While reading your hunt report I thought I was deep into a hunt report from late President Roosevelt; same kind of location, same game, same well-trained stock horse and similar game behavior "always going into the willow" when situation went bad!
If buffalo come back on your farm next, let some mating with your cattle first before shooting them, in case market price for cattle/bison hybrids' meat commands higher market prices than beef.
