It did not make a lot of sense to me, it went from a 6lb in 6.5 wby then jumped up to a 8.1lb 300 win MAG.
That's, a pretty big difference in guns right there.

But as per usual it's goaat be a magnum, outside of LR stuff I've never seen the need for a magnum, I'd be going for a 6.5-7lb scoped weight stainless rifle in 30/06, a Blaser R93 would probably be my pick, at least it can be put in your pack.
I'd have open sights too just in case and having a, spare scope that 100% return to zero set up for the gun in QD mounts gives you an extra bit of reassurance.
Ut then the various kipplauf single shots we're designed for that sort of thing too, and they never really came out in magnum calibres either.
One in 7x65R would be brilliant in my book.
