Just got back from a 5 day hunt in a badlands area that I have hunted for the last 29 years.. Didn't make it last year as one of my best friends died and I had many issues to take care of at that time for his family. Was a great time.. saw numerous "good" bucks just not the one I was looking for..kicking myself a bit has I had a very heavy wide horned buck in my scope for about 3 minutes at 225 yards.. NO back fork, just a dagger.. should have probably taken him to get him out of the gene pool.. but, had I shot him my hunt and search for the other would have been over... Lots of fun and laughs as I hunted with one of my best friends for 3 of the 5 days I was there.. Great scenery and good relaxation..It's a good physical hunt.. no level ground..you are either going up or down.. makes it that much more exciting as you never know whats over the next little rise.. Pulled my camper trailer over to the area.. I stayed in this overnight..then drive my atv to a trailhead and go hunting on foot for the day. Generally doing 6 to 12 mile loops per day depending on which direction I headed and what I encountered during the day.. ![]() Some Pronghorn has I was entering the area..just off the road ![]() Also no shortage of prairie dogs in the area..as you can see, they completely devastate the vegetation .. ![]() My weapon of choice on this hunt.. 28 Nosler custom--Defiant action, Proof barrel, Timney triger, CA carbon fiber stock.. all in weighs about 7.5 lbs.. shoots 1/4" groups.. ![]() Sandstone structures in the area are always fun to check out.. ![]() ![]() ![]() Pics of the topography in the area.. ![]() ![]() Love this area.. one of my most fun hunts each year.. ![]() |
