John - I think there are about 1/2 dozen deaths due to bears each year in North America - seems about right.
Due to possible lack of reporting, we might not get firm numbers on polar bear attacks due to remote villages of inuit.

That low number does not prevent me from always packing a rifle when in the bush.

What the actual number of attacks, false charges, etc are, I do not know. Those numbers might be available somewhere.

I do not understand people who insist on hiking on what amounts to game (includes bear) trails. They are usually 'armed' with bear spray that is inside their back-pack, (& most times inside the plastic blister-pack) exactly where it can not be reached in the 1- to 3 seconds they have to react to an attack.
