Similar to my cousin's ranch (homesteads) in Southern Saskatchewan. The sloughs were about the only source of water, but there were a lot of them in the South (of Moosjaw).
Slough grass was poor, coarse feed though, so they grew and bailed oats for them as well. At one time, in the 60's they had about 3,000 head, on 25 sections.
