Re: Grizzly vs Electrified Deer Carcass

The town of Mackenzie, B.C. placed an electric fence around the town dump. This was due to the towns people complaints of not being able to dump their garbage due to the grizzlies- as many as 6 to 10 at any time time during the fall.

Because of the hydro-electric dam of Williston lake (they made the lake out of a river), the natural migration route of the bears in the fall of the year was changed - making them converge at the end of the lake - right at Mackenzie.

The fragrances lofting from the dump (South of town) were more attractive that the smells of town which included people.

After the fence went up, the bears overcame their fear of man and went to town for their fall shopping trip, turning all of them all into in-town garbage bears.

In one fall - 1998 I think it was, the game branch shot over 60 grizzlies (I was told 65 by the Min. of the Environment, trapped another 50 or more than shot them as well when they returned to what had become their normal last fattening up supper location. 110 to 130 bears in all, shot and killed one fall. They are no longer a problem in town, just further up the lake in the logging camps where they've always been a problem.

I am assuming really strong wire was used by the game branch and posssibly much higher ampherage as well. The bears stopped tring to eat the dump very quckly.
