Ripp - what distances are you commonly shooting, and do you spot them or do you call them in?

In South Texas, you can typically call them in, though admittedly some are smarter than others and will hold just out out site, or offer only a glimpse.

I had an old rancher tell me that If I was going to call coyotes be ready because when they come in they come right in to your lap. I didn't know if he meant in general or there on that particular ranch, but in my experience he was right. In the late evening you could get them to come in as close as 10 yards. An open sited lever action or a shotgun was best at that point.

Good Morning

Usually I wait for them to come in as close as I think before they start acting fidgety...but it all changes a lot depending on how much they have been called and type of terrain I am in..have shot them at 20 yards and have shot them at 200 or further..but, as I stated earlier, I really prefer fro them to come in as close as possible..when we call during their mating season or even early season it seems they are more apt to come in close..so we carry both 12 gauge shotguns and centerfire rifles..if they come running in and there are more then one its easier to get them all with the shotgun before they head out or figure out something is up..

thx
