Actually I've read some good stories about exactly this same thing and it seems that folklore is in love with the wolf for the wolf makes marvelous stories......but in reality the wolf towards man has been somewhat friendly over the centuries. As I said earlier documented attacks on man by wolves are extremely rare.
Interesting thought as to before the pen was used to record events.....and prior to firearms.....but even then the available history favors the good relationship of wolves toward man.....not necessarily vice versa however as it's fur has been prized forever and it's been snared, trapped and hunted in every manner known.
