have killed a few to "my gun", used a .30-06, 7mmwby & 6.5x55, but guided for more. The most effective weapon I have seen used on them is a hunter that knows what he is doing. No caliber of any rifle makes up for any of it. I live in elk country and the "norm" for a local here is a 25-06 or a .270win. There is very few 30-06's and fewer yet belted anythings.

I am in the minority I think as in all the elk killing I have been in on, they do not impress me as being tough at all. They do not handle velocity well at all, they seem to fold right up. A big heavy bull will travel no where with a broken front shoulder. Over half the archery kills dropped to the shot.

Now shot them in the ass or guts in the black and no have any idea of what you are doing or what they elk is doing and I will bet there will be a merry chase.
