The boys had a successful fall & winter this year, including first bucks for the two oldest. Eldest son (11) ended up killing two white tail does, one good sized pig, and this cull buck: Great story on the first doe he dropped this year. I had the boys facing the direction I though deer would come from, and I was watching a different direction. Three does came out where I expected (nice to be right for once) but I had no way to move where I could see them. Middle son (9) relieved me of my binoculars and it was with a tremendous amount of joy & pride that I listened to the two of them talk through the right deer to shoot, her position relative to other deer, and when to make the shot. I have to say that these days I enjoy watching my sons have a successful hunt at least as much, if not more, than I enjoy hunting myself. Not to be out-done, middle son killed a bigger pig, AND a bigger buck: Both hunted with 7mm-08 rifles using 139-grain Hornady Interbonds, though middle son is graduating to a Heym SR20 270 I’ve just set up for him…in the nick of time for youngest son to start using the Ruger 7mm-08 they all started with. |
