These things are expanding their range into our area here and our local unit is now noted in the game regs as a unit where they may be encountered. This is unimportant other than it is an official recognition that the species is moving into new areas.
They are in NE Washington also: I saw one about 300 to 400 pounds a few years ago when I was visiting friends living 25 miles north of Spokane. Was on a two lane black top about 6 miles east of highway 2, around 10 PM, when young grizz sauntered across the road in front of the pickup, maybe 25 feet out. Had the distinctive hump and dished face and very long claws. Color was brownish with some darkening around the forelegs and shoulders.
