Are You thinking what I also think, something linked with rut? IMHO there are no other reasons for a wolf to confront 3 healthy malamutes. And I also marvel at malamutes not very impressed by a wolf?
When young, I presented my dog, an oversized german shepherd,to a caged wolf. This dog which was the top dog all over the villages around, was ominously squealling and crawling on the ground, mad with fear.
Here in France, the only dog able of confronting wolves is the Patou.

All the others varieties of dog are fearing wolves.
