9.3x57 ....
Mech states that in Lamar Valley, YNP, wolves killed 25-33% of the coyotes each winter. Most are said to have been killed and not eaten, but rather, left with deep, crushing bite marks similar to the killing bites wolves leave on some dogs. I always thought they did that with dogs because of the proximity to people and would have otherwise eaten them, and maybe that is to some degree true, but also it appears they do kill some canids without intent to eat.

I drive through the northwest corner of YNP every week of the year..have on more than one occasion seen coyotes in known "wolf" areas...which quite frankly has surprised me as well..coyotes are opportunists as well as survivalists. They will go were the food is but are NOT stupid..think if they get a scent of wolves they are gone..and if the wolves get their scent, the coyotes are gone again, only this time on a more permanent basis..
.
The one thing I do notice is the coyotes seen in wolf areas is very infrequent, were in non-wolf areas, seeing coyotes on a regular basis is more the norm..
.
As to size--I was hearing all sorts of high weight claims, some in the 175 plus range--however, if one can trust the numbers put forth by the Montana Fish and Game--the largest of the 74 taken was in the 132 lb. plus range...
