For Montana it's shotgun only in spring season but you can use a rifle in the fall.
I use my Ithaca/SKB, mod 150, 12ga with 1 1/4oz of 5's in the left(full)and 1 1/4 bb in the right (mod) or just 5's in both works fine too.
