1st Day Of Deer Season

My brother and I hiked up into the high country to scout for deer and try out some new gear, with hope that we'd find a nice buck while we were at it. We saw a lot of deer, but no big bucks. Here are some photos from the trip...

Dave,
If I remember from 24HrC, those pics are from Kodiak, is that correct? Beautiful country, no question.

What kind of spotting scope is that and how do you like it? I've got an older B&L 20-60x that has good optics, but weighs a flippin' ton.

I think Ovis is already in the Brooks Range for sheep, and come Wednesday, I'll be chasing the glacier ghosts here in Southcentral. Might take a nice black bear if the opportunity presents itself and a ram is in the game bag.

We are hoping to get out around Knight Island for deer later this year, probably in late October or early November. Boss might kill me though. The sheep hunt is a 10 day hunt, so I'll be back in the office on the 20th, but I take off for Zimbabwe on Sept 15 for nearly 3 weeks. With the way the reports are coming in from the pilots of SAA, it may be 3 weeks!

Good luck on those blacktails. Tasty critters.

It's an Alpen, but I forget the specs...it's ok, but not really worth much. It was dirt cheap, so I figured what the heck.

Sheep hunting is something I haven't tried yet...I don't need another addiction...<grin>

I've hunted Knight for black bear...and saw a couple deer while i was there. Blacktails are my favorite...of all..

Would like to hear more about your Zim plans, as Brother Bill and I are booked for two weeks in Aug of '06 for leopard...

Here's the rest of the set, while I'm at it....though you've seen 'em.

Nice vistas you've got there. How high up are you? I know that in my older condition, anything above 3000' is way too much for me since I'll be gasping if I exhert myself. I should've checked out Alaska in my 30's.

It was something less than 3000', probably 26-2800, but a pretty tough climb. I'm in my 30's, and I was pretty whipped at the top....
