These “System Berenger” guns were forerunners of the slightly later Flobert guns in a way. They did not use a separate powder charge, but a special primer, about .400” diameter, that contained priming compound and a bit of powder. That stud in the chamber is an anvil, just like the anvil in a Berdan case. Here is a video on another such Berenger rifle.
