circa 1850, with browned slightly swamped octagonal barrel, the top-flat signed in gold 'G. NAGEL IN BADEN, twin gold band at muzzle, similar banding at breech, dove-tailed bead fore-sight, dove-tailed standing notch rear-sight with additional folding leaf, scroll engraved breech-block and long top-tang, spirally carved nipple-snail with platinum plug, scroll engraved bar-action hump-back lock with stepped tail and signed within an engraved banner 'G. NAGEL IN BADEN', scroll engraved hammer, walnut full-stock chequered at the wrist, iron patch-box to right hand side of butt with scroll engraved hinge and a cover featuring a stag in a woodland setting leaping a low fence, iron heel-plate with short top-spur, provision for oval escutcheon to the underside of butt (missing), scrolled pistol-grip trigger-guard tang, scroll engraved trigger-guard bow, double set-triggers, scroll engraved moulded sideplate, plain ramrod thimbles and original iron-mounted wood ramrod, much original finish throughout

Other Notes: A note from the vendor stated that this rifle was purchased by him from Mssrs. Wallis & Wallis in the 1960's for the sum of £14. It was formerly in the collection of The Duke of Hamilton, Brodick Castle, Isle of Arran and was probably purchased new from the maker by Karl Ludwig Friedrich, Grand Duke of Baden, whose daughter married the 11th Duke of Hamilton in 1843

PURDEY, 314 1/2 OXFORD STREET, LONDON', dove-tailed bead fore-sight, standing notch rear-sight, plain angular breech with platinum lines and vented plug, scroll engraved top-tang, the top-flat featuring a mask of a tiger, borderline engraved bar-action lock signed 'PURDEY', the front also engraved with a scene of stags at rest, the tail with scrolls, scroll engraved hammer with sliding safe behind, chequered walnut half-stock with raised cheek-piece, iron patch-box to right hand side of butt with engraved hinge, the circular lid engraved with a seated doe and a standing stag beneath a tree, the whole scene with a rope-twist border, iron scroll-engraved heel-plate with a running boar to the top-spur, engraved trigger-guard tang with chequered pistol-grip spur, border engraved trigger-guard bow with a central scene of a bolting stag, engraved finial, moulded iron ramrod throat and horn fore-end tip, plain thimbles to the under-rib and substantial ebony mushroom-headed ramrod

circa 1860, with heavy octagonal browned twist 33 1/2in. barrel with Henry rifling, the top-flat signed 'ALEXr. HENRY 8 SOUTH ST ANDREWS ST EDINBURGH' near the breech and 'PATENT NO. 427 GAUGE 451' forwards of the rear-sight, the front half of the top-flat cross-hatched and matted, broad dove-tailed bead fore-sight, rear-sight with four graduated folding leaves, each marked with the respective range and scroll engraved with a central platinum line, the breech-block with engraved bands, scrolls and featuring the mask of a lion to the top, engraved platinum plug, fully scroll engraved top-tang, borderline and scroll engraved bar-action lock (much colour remaining) signed 'ALEXr.
