TKS for that note, Al - I like the Hawken rifles, but in smaller calibres. The hooked butt plate does not lend itself to comfortable shooting in larger calibres with the amount of powder needed to make them perform at the ranges I demand - well past 50yards.

Ferric Nitrate is indeed the stock treatment, after which heat/flame is needed to bring out the colour.

It's a rather mildly tiger striped piece of wood. He has built much more colourful maple stocks in the past.

Bit of walnut to set the stage - my 14 bore.


This is his own .62 Hawken hunting AND target rifle, built a few years back and used to take his last couple moose.
