...Here is a Dakota African take down in 416 Rigby and 338 Lapua http://www.gunsinternational.com/detail....ds.ad_id%20DESC
That is $12k. And pretty typical for a well made magnum take down.
That is EXACTLY what I'd like to end up with! Unfortunately it may take a while with a Technical Sergeants paycheck... and my wife thought High Power Rifle competitive shooting was expensive.

...As for the calibers you mention, only the 416 would legally be usable on all African game. The super flat trajectory of the 338 Lapua isn't really needed in most of Africa, and is not large enough to be legal for "Dangerous Game" such as buffalo or elephant. Not to mention that if you needed to replace lost ammo (say one of your bags gets sent to Iceland instead of Zimbabwe), there is no way in hell you'd find 338 Lapua anywhere in Africa...
I'd read somewhere that that you should shoot as much gun as you can handle and than something in the .416 realm was a good do all for dangerous game. Maybe a bit light for Elephant, of course the PH would be there for back up too. It was suggested in the same article to bring something a bit lighter in the .33 caliber range for lighter game if you'd already gotten the through the dangerous stuff. Seeing as the .338 Lapua is based on the Rigby case it just made sence to do a take-down rifle in these calibers. That and I've got a "thing" for take-downs. It seems that several of the gunmakers you'd listed in your post (thanks VERY MUCH for those links BTW) seem to be thinking along the same lines as I.
