Quote: True, once all the petals are gone they will penetrate further due to the lack of resistance. I shot a Giraffe at 30 mts with a 358 Rum 225 grain ACP-monometal- the petals all came off just under the skin and the shank was stopped on the off side shoulder blade. MV was 3200fpe so contact not much less. Same shot and bullet from 35Sambar on camel about 100mts out, same thing only no bone contact. Shank came to rest about 4" in from the off side. MV about 2850fps. In both case the animal died after covering (30mts Camel, 100mts Giraffe). Both would have died quicker had the petals remained intact. In the case of the Giraffe a 250 or better yet a 275 grain bullet would have penetrated further. Is it needed, in these cases, No. For an angling shot, most likely yes or if not a good heart shot then yes for a better blood track to follow. Daryl that is fantastic penetration on the Moose, I also thought they would be a tougher animal to kill. |
