Re: 2 dumb questions re new Mauser 98 actions

If someone is interested in just how high production bolt action rifles were made back in the day of the 98 Mauser and the like, there is a book that details the requirements needed. It is not of the 98 mauser but rather the 1903 Springfield. Which many of you know was for most design considerations a copy of the mauser design. Back in the day the US government was looking for additional contractors to help the Springfield arsenal meet demand so they produced a rather detailed book discussing the manufacturing process, machinery, and materials that would be needed. It is a very interesting book and titled, "Manufacture of the Model 1903 Springfield Service Rifle". And if you thought you knew how a rifle action is made be ready to be surprised as for example the order of operations is quite different then you usually think of with our modern machines. And the amount of dedicated machines and fixtures are mind spinning. It is a fun book to study over.
My particular reason to read it was because I wanted to know how the cut the little lead in chamfers for the bolt lugs that cam the bolt forward as you turn the bolt closed. Fascinating little scraping machine did the trick. What is also fascinating is this is the age before High Speed cutting steel for tools. The tool sharpening departments must have been huge and manned 24/7. BTW the book also gives estimated resharpening needed schedules so who is ever considering back then quoting would know.
