Sorry to raise this ugly topic, and I won't get into the politics, but this is a gun forum.
An older, imported Mauser 98 in .30-06 could be anything from an original Mauser sporter (A, B, M) to a European bolt gun in that caliber built on the 98 action (military or commercial). It could also be an American custom creation. As far as I know there are no military bolt action rifles chambered in .30-06 other than the 1903 Springfield.
Any thoughts on this?
I have a Brazilian Mod 954 made by Itajuba chambered in 30 06 ,there were also quite a few countries who rebarreled their older service rifles into 30 06 in the 50's.
Columbian 7mm short rifles made by FN were converted to .30-06. This was done to simplify ammunition supply when Columbia acquired a quantity of US M1 .30-06 rifles following WWII. Similarly so were many Peruvian Model 1935 7.65mm short rifles when Peru also obtained a quantity of US M1 .30-06 rifles and wanted to standardize on cal. 30-06 for its army. The Peruvian Model 1935 rifle also has a reversed safety where the safety is disengaged when to the right unlike the normal Mauser 98 which disengages to the left.
