RWS cases in loaded ammunition and for reloading have always been a millimetre shorter than the standard 73.02mm dimension for the 404 Jeffery cartridge. You would not expect that those cutting chambers for the 404 would base the chamber neck dimension on the shorter 72mm case although I suppose it is a possibility.
My Oberndorf Mauser Sporter which started life as a 10.75x68 and rechambered to 404J sometime in the 1970's, chambers all the factory ammo and cases I have for it, Parker Hale (Norma loaded), RWS, Hornady and 60's era Kynoch.
