I read that is was a combination of poor placement and poor bullet performance. I think the 1st bullet broke up in the lion's shoulder and the 2nd broke up it its nouth. Grey lived a day or so after the attack and died of his injuries.

I had a M1910 commercail Ross in 280 which was a very nice rifle.
