I have a 54 Winchester in 30-06 with a dovetail on the front receiver for a previously used scope mount.
I'm seeking views on safety of rifles with a similar dovetail. I have seen quite a few Mausers on this Forum and there are a number that are used at my local gun club. Most of those I've seen are 98's.
I approached a gunsmith recently to fill the dovetail with a blank so that I can fit a Redfield Jnr bridgemount in the existing holes. but he refused saying that the rifle is too dangerous to shoot.
Another Gunsmith says its only an issue if I rebarrel to a magnum type calibre. (I have no intention of doing this)
Any thoughts, feedback on experience with Dovetailed receivers.
