I agree. The look of the Lions is a bit disappointing as the actual lions are preserved in the Smithsonian. They could have obtained photos of them for the engraver.

It is a shame-to at least- that Rigby have stooped to such commercialism without going the extra mile to have the lions look like the actual animals in question. Well may be they did and that is what they look like????





They look very spot on actually. The poor old taxidermy may be one result for their looks.




Did the taxidermists at the time use large dogs as models for the forms?

Now if Rigby used better looking lions for the engraving, nomdoubt we'd see lots of complaint posts about the non authentic looking Tsavo lions as well.

The Field Museum Tsavo lions lack IMO proper width to the face. But if the actual skulls were used (?) the dimensions might be authentic. But it's possible only the skins were used.
