Re: Mauser rifles at auctions

The relatively subtle schnabel fore-end tip on the Type B is worthy of a discussion thread of its own.

The rounded, slightly flared tip with barely perceptible keel on the underside fits the thumb and fore-finger of the left hand perfectly, and is clearly designed to be gripped accordingly to allow the rifle to be pulled into the shoulder. Hence there is no need for checkering as the grip is at the schnabel.

I had a serious misunderstanding of schnabel fore-ends until I acquired a Type B and started shooting it seriously. Something of an epiphany to quickly discover the schnabel's true purpose!

Now I laugh when I see the oversized donkey-dick schnabels on some rifles offered for sale these days!
