It's not a Mauser but a Win 70.

When it comes to guns, @grizskins is the guy to talk to. When Phil offered to replicate Alaska’s first licensed Master Guide Hal Waugh’s “Big Nan” we could not say no.

The fourth in our series "APHA Remembers Great Guides & Rifles of the Past". The Tools of the Legends auction rifle for this year’s event is a close duplication of Big Nan, the rifle carried by Hal Waugh, Alaska’s first licensed Master Guide. Hal’s famous Winchester Model 70 rifle, chambered for the powerful .375 Weatherby cartridge.

Hal was quite a gun fanatic. He was a knowledgeable shooter and reloader and his primary rifle of choice for bear hunting was “Big Nan”. It is an early 1947 vintage Winchester model 70 that Hal sent to Weatherby in 1949 to be rechambered into their new and powerful .375 Weatherby. The massive Weatherby cartridge utilized a slightly enlarged .375 H& H case to produce even more power, but in a pinch, a hunter could also safely fire regular .375 H& H ammunition in one. Big Nan became a part of Hal’s legend and for a number of years after his death in 1973, the rifle resided in the UAF museum in Fairbanks, Alaska. It now resides in Kenai, Alaska with a friend of the Waugh family.

Weatherby has donated two boxes of their excellent factory ammunition to APHA to be included with this rifle.

This is a great addition to anyone’s rifle collection and we are sure will be a huge draw in our online auction January 9, 2021.
