The Treaty of Versailles that ended WW1 prevented German sporters being made in 8x57
If so, its a bit hard to explain the 8x57 Type B in my gunsafe leaving the Oberndorf factory in 1922. As I understand it, plenty more referred to in Speed's book.
Perhaps that's the reason (many/most/all?) were barreled-up with a .318 bore through the 1920s, rather than the .323 bore, even though throated for the later spitzer cartridge.
...or was it only the Type A that was restricted, perhaps?
Must buy Speed's book, but its become very expensive these last few years!
They might have been able to produce 8x57 sporters for export.
