Re: Mauser rifles at auctions

C.G.Haenel made Mauser rifle in 9x57
23" One third octagon, two thirds round barrel with integral matted rib, is silver inlaid "C. G. Haenel Suhl Germany" in milled out portion of rib. Rib is fitted with folding rear and ivory bead front sight. Case hardened commercial Mauser action has border engraved and stippled top of receiver ring, and is fitted with Lyman model 37 bolt stop aperture sight. Bottom metal has lever floorplate release and is fitted with double set triggers. Bolt has classic commercial Mauser turned down handle with pear shaped knob. Bolt number does not match action. Relatively plain dense European walnut stock is classically styled with short schnabeled forend which is bolted to barrel, and raised side panels reinforcing wood around action. Stock measures 14" over steel buttplate, and features right hand cheekpiece and point pattern checkering on rounded pistol grip. Haenel SN 20619 is on bottom of barrel visible when action removed from wood. CONDITION: Fine, original. Barrel retains 60 - 70% original blue. Action retains most of its case hardening color. Bottom metal is mostly silver with traces of color. Stock retains most of its original finish with numerous light marks, and one or two heavier dings. Bore is excellent, bright and shiny throughout. Action is smooth. There is a 1" crack behind top tang with left side beginning to lift. (This should be stabilized before firing.)
