Columbian Mausers crests [ground off ?

Anyone know why the Military Columbian Mausers had there ''Columbian Crest'' ,ground off ? have seen several like this ,was it so if they when surplused off and IF, used for nefarious reasons ,Columbia couldn't be implicated in any way ?
