I first started corresponding with Don Seiffert several years ago. I was surprised to learn that he had sold his collection of something (I forget what) and had started collecting original Oberndorf Sporters, since he seemed to have no interest in hunting or shooting. However, he was a pleasant man to communicate with, vastly knowledgeable and patient with what must have seemed to be elementary questions. I was equally surprised when he later told me that he was selling off his collection of Mausers, and had reduced it to a Fred Adolph creation which he had listed on Guns International. I once visited him at his home in Massachusetts, and found to my surprise, a very spartan apartment located near the waterfront in a touristy seaport town. Nothing was on display which would have revealed his passion for historical Mausers. I had bought a Mauser or two from him by then, and picked up one from him on that occasion. He was a real asset to the shooting community and will be missed. I had written him about two months ago and had gotten no answer. Now I know why. |
