The action of the rifle is a Mauser, Oberndorf, commercial one as sold by the Mauser factory as "action only" to other gunmakers, both German and British. The Mauser serial number 26140 dates it to 1908. The CROWN – crown/N proofmarks indicate nitro proof, using the smokeless "4000 atm special proof powder". Someone bent the bolt handle back, probably when the rifle was rebarreled and restocked with that 1950s style "monte carlo" stock. Such stocks with slanting, contrasting foreend tips became popular in the 1950s, aping Weatherby's "California style".
