Re: A classic revisited - .425 WR

There is something to be said for classic DG cartridges designed for the Mauser 98.
The .404 Jeffrey and the .425 Wesley Richards were designed to function in a medium length action while J. Rigby commissioned a long action from Mauser for his .416 Big Game Rifle.
The .404 uses a .423" bore while the .425 WR uses a .435". The .416 Rig.is actually a .416.
The issue with the .425 WR ,which is based on a shortened .404 case ,is the rebated rim from a .543 base to .467. The same rim dia. as the 8x57 Mauser. There have been reports of feeding and extraction problems. The case also has a smaller case capacity and requires higher pressures to reach advertised specs.
The .416 Ruger is a good alternative for a working rifle with a 98 action.
I would go with the .404 but I respect that, like choosing a woman, it's a personal thing.
