Re: Mauser rifles at auctions

Gentlemen - what would you make of this description of a rifle to be offered at auction here (in NZ), is it an 8x57 improperly described or does the 8.85 mean something else (like the land diameter for 9 mm for instance)??

"8.85H Calibre Mauser Bolt Action Sporting Rifle.
24 5/8" 4-stage round barrel. Ramped foresight.
Open V rear sight with 2 flip up leafs. Marked
"200" and "300". Bore good. German proofs.
Receiver wall marked "Waffenfabrik Mauser-
Oberndorf A/N". Metalwork with approximately
90% finish, thinning on magazine plate and trigger
guard. Double triggers. Very good walnut stock
with a lipped forend and a cheek piece. Chequered
at arc pistol grip. Rubber butt pad. Sling swivels. 2
screws on back of receiver probably for a scope
mount. Overall length 44½". S/N 76981."

Sorry I can't do a picture . . .

Regards Foster
