"It is known that Kaiser Wilhelm was a good shot and successful hunter, but he needed all the help he could get from the gun makers. Many of the Kaiser’s guns with horn trigger guards have a hook like you see on this gun.
Other guns have a steel hook that can be folded out of the forearm as the one shown below.
