Joel Dorleac asked me to post pictures of a new masterpiece, a mansized Mauser smallbore .22 lr made in the style of his magnificent "Best Quality Plains Game Rifles". He had shown the metal parts in the white last summer when I visited his shop. The whole project took him nearly 3 years to complete. He started with a 1930s vintage original Mauser ES350B action because of his preference for a long Mauser extractor and controlled feed. After the action was trued up he welded on a new commercial Mauser type bolthandle, fitted a much modified Recknagel adjustable trigger and carved new bottom metal out of solid steel. On top is an action as it left the Mauser, Oberndorf factory with it's double stage trigger and sheet metal triggerguard, below Dorleac's much modified version. Another view of the new bottom metal: He also made a trap buttplate to hold a spare magazine: A 24" Lothar Walther barrel of Dorleac's own profile was fitted to the action and equipped with Dorleac's own open sights, claw mounts and a Kahles CT 2-7x36 variable scope. Small parts like the extractor, bolt stop and screws are fire blued. The barreled action was stocked by hand in a superb blank of French walnut. A satinised oil finish and 24 lpi checkering completed the job. ENJOY! |
