Wow, someone must have really hated that barrel band!
Just think of the work involved and the cost of doing it!
Remove brazed on front sight ramp.
Remove brazed on barrel band.
Re-braze front sight ramp.
Re-blue barrel.
Fit new swivel in fore-end etc etc.
Then again maybe they just ground through the band and heated it up and removed it that way.
Maybe that would account for the "detent".
Would still need a reblue though.
As NitroX has stated, these guns seem to come in different "versions".
IMO some Whitworths may have 2 recoil lugs, others have only one.
Some have barrel band swivels, others have the swivel in the wood.
Some have Whitworth on the front receiver ring and some do not etc etc.
Maybe, just maybe, your Whitworth came from the factory with the swivel in the wood.
