Rear mount on a Mannlicher, split-bridge Mauser or Commission rifle is usually a side-mount on left side. Doesn't get in the way on those I've fired belonging to friends, although my own examples are open-sighted.
The thumb doesn't want to stay on the bolt-handle 'root' once the bolt is lifted BTW.
