Two reasons for the thumb cut:
#1 Many user feel it is more comfortable to reload especially on a scoped rifle.
#2 Controlling hot gases in case of a ruptured shell was Mauserīs intention.
And last but not least a customer wants to have a cutout because most old british rifles had it.
